Teen Inc.

Wow. I had the pleasure of seeing Teen Inc. perform live at Mercury Lounge last night. They blew my mind. The songs on their myspace and website are awesome, but do little justice to how incredible these guys are live. As soon as I walked into the venue I was transported back to the late 70's and early 80's by the synth-funk sounds drifting from the stage. Teen Inc. is the new "Minneapolis Sound" at its finest. Their sound is somewhere between Prince, Paul Hardcastle, Mazarati, Andrew Cymone, and Level 42...with just a touch of Petite Blonde. Their bassist holds a solid groove, slapping and popping like Mark King while singing and then hitting hard staccato notes during melodies ala Stanley Clarke. The lead singer and frontman draws you in with his smooth vocals while dropping tight funk chording all over his telecaster. When the guitarists double up I feel like I am listening to a Wooten Brothers instrumental. Don't even get me started on the wailing 80's sexy sax solos that sneak up on you out of nowhere. Go see these dudes ASAP. They are playing Monster Island Basement in Brooklyn this Friday.

Late Tuesday Banger

Yeah, it's Wednesday. I know. Here's your bang-a-lang, finally. It's from way back in '94...the frontman for Obits old band:

Tips from Austin

Our Austin-based correspondent got to catch a free show by The Sword at Waterloo Records recently and loved it. In fact, he said they "kicked ass." They make me want to throw their cassette on, crank it, and play the shit out of some Altered Beast on Sega Genesis in my friend's parent's basement.

Bad Dream

Have you ever seen the movie "The Van" from 1977? In my book it's a cult classic about van culture in the 70's. It makes me wanna throw on a tight tee, some bell bottoms, and do some serious making out in an oceanside parking lot in the back of a Chevy van. It's pretty rad except for the weak theme song and wuss soundtrack music. If I were cruising around in a sweet decked-out 70's van, trying to pick up babes, doing some drag racing for cash, and smoking drugs, I would want to be listening to Bad Dream from Brooklyn. The band plays loose stoner riff-rock that borders on early fuzzed-out metal. Check out Black Blizzard on their myspace and experience the riffing guitar, enormous fuzz-wah bass, and primal drumming. Turn it up and imagine rolling down a two lane highway in your Chevy van called the "Straight Arrow" on the way to meet your friends at the bowling alley OR rolling down the BQE in Brooklyn with Bad Dream in their GMC van called "Betsy II."

Ominous Black

A few weeks ago we caught these guys playing live at JR's Bar in Philadelphia before they took off for their summer tour. This power trio creates an absolute ambient wall built out of epic guitar, huge bass tones and tribal beat drumming. Ominous Black is space metal. They build you up and bring you crashing down to your knees. Drummer/vocalist Wud burrows deep into your subconscious while guitarist Taco weaves lofty soundscapes. They are the soundtrack to the mass exodus of the last remnants of genetically engineered life-forms who were left for dead with an arc of a spaceship on a dying planet.

Dope Body

Dope Body played the last Jelly Rockyard show of the summer in Brooklyn last Saturday. The Baltimore trio combines the raw power of the Stooges with tweeked guitar & bass noise better than a post-Rage Tom Morello. Check out the song Enemy Outta Me:

Hull

“Concrete, down tempo, doom, stoner sludge rock, metal…Hull is the shipwreck you wanna watch while sitting in a light house. Everything you want to hear and see from a band that is loud as fuck. An army of decapitated and limbless torsos, squirting rock booze out of every vein. Pick up their debut album Sole Lord here. They are currently working on a new album.”

Bastard Love Child of Rock & Roll

Bastard Love Child of Rock & Roll (BLORR) plays the last Jelly Rockyard show of this summer this Saturday, September 11. 554 Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg. These kids harness the raw energy of a lightning bolt, mix it with a dash of crotch-thrusting, and a pinch of broken disco ball.  If the Black Keys toughened up and got Jeff Buckley's ghost to sing lead vocals, you might come close to the sound of BLORR.

Hank III & Assjack Tonight

If you haven't had the chance to check out the circus that is a Hank III show yet, get your ass over to Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight for classic country followed by hill-billy metal. Make sure to get good and whiskey drunk before you go.

Tinsel Teeth

“Imagine swimming through a pool of rotten, moldy and sludgy dead bodies, trying to stay hidden from drooling zombie squids. You dive down deep and come back up for air in a beaver den, floating on the surface of the vom. You aren’t alone in this little sheltered abode, Tinsel Teeth is there, all four of them sitting indian style smoking dried squid dust. Tinsel Teeth fuck shit up, squid or human, you are dead meat. A bass, a guitar, a drum kit, a voice. This power 4some combines guttural, driving, distorted and groovy bass lines with blistering guitar sounds, a drummer who beats like a cannibal and a girl whose yell makes you nauseous. Tinsel Teeth’s live show is absolutely disgusting, you’ll be covered in blood literally, spit and pissed on, the singer gets naked. This band shares a level of pure insanity with the likes of Daughters, but way more fuckin rockin. Check out the song Stock Footage of Stuntmen and then buy their new CD.”
