The boys from Yorba Linda have a new band called Franklin Stein. Playing at Union Pool with Clear Plastic Masks on June 20.

FEARLESS SONS - NEW EP

Through the grapevine we are hearing that Fearless Sons (formerly Primitive Skin) is set to record their second EP at Adrian Grenier's WRECKROOM studios in Brooklyn. "Fearless Sons are a three-piece hard psych rock band from New York City. The band’s sound is a departure from and a reaction to the airy synth-pop sound that dominates the underground music scene today. The band roots itself in the musical aesthetic of musical icons like The Jesus and Mary Chain, Primal Scream, Spacemen 3, The Stooges and Nick Cave while also drawing inspiration from primitive urges, dark imagery and the human experience. Their compositions shift dynamically from one moment to the next, moving from hazy repetitive guitar riffs to explosive grinding choruses. Fearless Sons will take you on a ride through hazy ruins of time only to spit you back out onto the dirty city streets of New York." We are excited to hear what these boys put out. PRIMITIVE SKIN TO RELEASE FIRST EP

This just in...our friends Primtive Skin are headed to BIAS studios in DC to record their first EP in early December. We have heard some sneak peeks of the demo recordings of these tunes and are pumped to hear the final versions. We recommend Primitive Skin to fans of heavy psych and shoegaze, particularly those of you who enjoy bands like the Brian Jonestown Massacre, the Jesus and Mary Chain, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Crocodiles. Look for the EP to drop around January/February 2012.

Barr Brothers, Self-Titled Debut Album

Amazing songwriters and instrumentalists Brad and Andrew Barr from the Slip release their full legnth debut as the Barr Brothers on Tuesday September 26. Go grab a copy or download one on i-Tunes. Those of following this group over the last year or so (and lucky enough to have grabbed a pre-release of the album at a live show) know that they are something really special. A beautiful blend of traditional folk, polyrhythms, blues guitar, african grooves, experimental rock, and wonderful lyricism. Somewhere between Ali Farka Toure, Ry Cooder, Paul Simon, Wilco, and Zeppelin. And by the way, the have a harp player. The song "Beggar in the Morning" might just be one of my all-time favorites.

Checked out Disappears live show in Brooklyn at Union Pool a little while back. Just wanted to throw out a late thumbs up. Great band. They were just on tour with Bronze God favorite Obits (who were all in attendance for the Union Pool show).

BLORR @ Cameo Gallery

Florida's Bastard Lovechild of Rock and Roll aka BLORR aka Le BLORR played Cameo Gallery in Billberg last night. The duo jammed out a couple of new heaters in their set. Interesting use of bass and synth triggers by drummer Adam Winn to cover the low end and fill out the sound. All around a good show.

Check them out tonight and tomorrow night in Montauk.

Primitive Skin

We recently caught up with our buddies Brian Whiteley and Sam Dye from multiple former Brooklyn projects such as The Rich Get Richer. The boys have started a new group called Primitive Skin with new guitarist/Jersey heart-throb Ryan Bradley. This band is vast departure from the airy synth-pop that dominates the Brooklyn music scene today. The band seeks to put the balls back into rock while rooting itself in something more spiritual, drawing from icons such as The Stooges, Nick Cave, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and Primal Scream. The psych-sleaze-rock trio will take you on a droned trance journey through foggy ancient temples and then spit you back out onto dirty city streets, drunkenly kicking over trashcans and yelling at girls in short skirts. The band shifts dynamically from one moment to the next, moving from hazy repetitive riffs to explosive grinding choruses. Check their live recordings out on myspace before your friends do and see them live in Brooklyn asap.

Teen Inc.

Wow. I had the pleasure of seeing Teen Inc. perform live at Mercury Lounge last night. They blew my mind. The songs on their myspace and website are awesome, but do little justice to how incredible these guys are live. As soon as I walked into the venue I was transported back to the late 70's and early 80's by the synth-funk sounds drifting from the stage. Teen Inc. is the new "Minneapolis Sound" at its finest. Their sound is somewhere between Prince, Paul Hardcastle, Mazarati, Andrew Cymone, and Level 42...with just a touch of Petite Blonde. Their bassist holds a solid groove, slapping and popping like Mark King while singing and then hitting hard staccato notes during melodies ala Stanley Clarke. The lead singer and frontman draws you in with his smooth vocals while dropping tight funk chording all over his telecaster. When the guitarists double up I feel like I am listening to a Wooten Brothers instrumental. Don't even get me started on the wailing 80's sexy sax solos that sneak up on you out of nowhere. Go see these dudes ASAP. They are playing Monster Island Basement in Brooklyn this Friday.

Have you ever seen the movie "The Van" from 1977? In my book it's a cult classic about van culture in the 70's. It makes me wanna throw on a tight tee, some bell bottoms, and do some serious making out in an oceanside parking lot in the back of a Chevy van. It's pretty rad except for the weak theme song and wuss soundtrack music. If I were cruising around in a sweet decked-out 70's van, trying to pick up babes, doing some drag racing for cash, and smoking drugs, I would want to be listening to Bad Dream from Brooklyn. The band plays loose stoner riff-rock that borders on early fuzzed-out metal. Check out Black Blizzard on their myspace and experience the riffing guitar, enormous fuzz-wah bass, and primal drumming. Turn it up and imagine rolling down a two lane highway in your Chevy van called the "Straight Arrow" on the way to meet your friends at the bowling alley OR rolling down the BQE in Brooklyn with Bad Dream in their GMC van called "Betsy II."

Dope Body played the last Jelly Rockyard show of the summer in Brooklyn last Saturday. The Baltimore trio combines the raw power of the Stooges with tweeked guitar & bass noise better than a post-Rage Tom Morello. Check out the song Enemy Outta Me:
